Caption: Striated muscle fibre, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight cellular structures and proteins: actin (green), cell nuclei (blue), neuropeptide (red). Actin is one of the main contractile muscle proteins. Striated (also called skeletal) muscle is under conscious control, and is used to move the limbs of the skeleton, such as the legs and arms. The banded pattern seen here is formed by the arrangement of fibrils of actin and another muscle protein, myosin. The arrangement of muscle fibres has satellite cells along their edges, and the nuclei seen here are of these satellite, or peripheral cells.
