Caption: Tendon. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fractured tendon. The fracture plane has shown the parallel alignment of the many collagen fibres. Collagen fibres vary in size, but are generally around 0.01 millimetres wide. The parallel structure of a tendon produces a tissue that is flexible, but remains inelastic and able to resist pulling forces. A tendon joins a muscle to a bone. Magnification: x1000 when printed 10cm wide.
