Caption: False-colour lateral (profile) angiogram of the left internal carotid artery (pink), showing the many branches (blue) which supply blood to the left hemisphere of the cerebrum. The left and right carotid arteries are the two main arteries of the neck. At the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple), each one divides into two branches, the internal and external carotid arteries. The internal carotid supplies the cerebrum, forehead, nose, eye and middle ear, while the external carotid supplies the face, scalp and neck. Angiography is the X-ray investigation of an artery that has been outlined by prior introduction of a radio-opaque contrast medium.
