Caption: Artery wall. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the inner wall (endothelium) of the carotid artery. The nuclei of endothelial cells cause the cells to bulge out from the wall. The orange fibres consist of the blood clotting protein fibrin, which has precipitated on the arterial wall as a result of sample preparation. The carotid artery, which carries blood from the heart to the brain, is a large, elastic artery. Its inner wall (tunica intima) consists of a layer of simple squamous epithelial cells supported by collagenous connective tissue.
