Caption: Tomato leaf surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a tomato leaf (Lycopersicon esculentum). It is covered in trichomes (red), which secrete oil, and hairs. Both structures protect the plant against predators and reduce water loss through evaporation. Also seen are pores, called stomata (bright green ovals). These are the site of gaseous exchange, or respiration. Carbon dioxide enters the plant for use in photosynthesis and waste oxygen exits the plant's tissues at the stomata. Water vapour also evaporates through the stomata.
