Caption: Artery. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a healthy human artery in the hip. The lumen (white), the arterial space, is at far left. The arterial wall (purple) consists of three basic layers. Directly next to the endothelium that lines the lumen is the thin tunica intima. The highly elastic tunica media, the largest of the layers, becomes the tunica adventitia at the thick vertical line at right. The elasticity of artery walls allows for pulsile blood flow. Haemotoxylin and eosin stain. Magnification: x85 at 6x7cm size.
