Caption: Leaf anatomy. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a leaf from a holly mangrove plant (Acanthus ilicifolius). This plant can grow in brackish and salty water, and salt glands are seen here across the upper surface of the leaf. This is where the plant secretes the excess salt that it obtained from the surrounding water. A very thin layer across the surface is the cuticle (pink). The red droplets in the dips in the surface are oil drops in the palisade cells. The rest of the tissue is mostly cellulose.
