Caption: Blood-filled foetal aorta. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a foetal aorta filled with red blood cells (erythrocytes). The aorta is the body's main artery. It carries blood from the heart around the body. The vessel wall consists of an inner layer of endothelial cell (beige) surrounded by muscle (pink), which contracts to move blood along the aorta. Magnification: x185 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
