Caption

Blood capillary. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a section through a human blood capillary containing red blood cells (red/centre). Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body - not much wider than red blood cells - and provide nutrients and oxygen to nearly all living tissue. Their thin walls consist of a single layer of endothelial cells, the nuclei of which can be seen here (orange upper left and lower right). This capillary is from connective tissue in the human vulva. Magnification x1895 at 6x4.5cm size.
