Caption: Blood capillaries. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a network of blood capillaries from striated (skeletal) muscle. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the body - barely wider than the blood cells that pass through them. Their thin walls consist of a single layer of endothelial cells that allows dissolved nutrients and oxygen to pass out into the surrounding tissue. In muscles blood capillaries are intimately associated with muscle cells, providing a variable flow of blood according to need. Magnification unknown.
