Caption: Capillaries of the thyroid gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a resin cast of capillary blood vessels in the thyroid gland. Capillaries are the smallest type of blood vessel. They permeate the thyroid gland, forming a mesh between the arteries and veins that supply it. Their walls are very thin and permeable, allowing the exchange of gases and nutrients between blood and tissues. The thyroid gland produces hormones that play an important role in regulating energy levels and the body's metabolism. The cast was made by injecting resin into the blood vessels, followed by chemical digestion of the surrounding tissues. Magnification: x120 at 6x7cm size.
