Caption: Gamma camera scan of the human heart, showing the variation in performance of the heart during diastole, the period between two successive contractions when the chambers fill with blood and systole, the period when the heart contracts. The colour-coding represents gamma radiation from red blood cells labelled with a technetium-based radioactive tracer. The red & white region at bottom right of the diastolic image represents the left ventricle filled with blood. This area is greatly reduced in the systolic image after the heart has contracted to pump blood around the circulation.
