Caption: Computed X-ray tomography (CT) scan of the chest of a healthy 46 years old man, showing his heart (centre, blue). Details of other organs & tissues surrounding the heart have been deliberately discarded from the image; this explains the large black areas on both sides of the heart. A cross- section of a vertebra (backbone) appears at bottom in white, with ribs to left & right. CT scans are obtained by taking a series of X-ray images from points on a circle around the subject. A computer is used to compare & arrange the resulting data into this image "slice" through the body. Scan courtesy of Radiography Dept., Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
