Caption: Coronary angiography. Coloured angiogram of the two coronary arteries and their branching network of arterioles in a healthy person. The coronary arteries originate at the base of the ascending aorta (top left) and provide the heart with its blood supply. Coronary angiography is carried out to identify the sites of narrowing or blockage which may lead to conditions such as myocardial infarction. Angiography enables blood vessels to be seen clearly on a X-ray film following the injection of a contrast medium. This is injected through a fine catheter which is inserted into the femoral artery at the groin or a carotid artery and then guided to the vessels to be examined.
