Caption: Healthy heart muscle. Coloured SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scan showing blood flow through the muscle of a healthy human heart. Three cross-sectional scans are shown (transverse, frontal and sagittal) and their relative angles illustrated in the box at lower right. SPECT scanning is carried out to diagnose a type of heart disease called ischaemia, where the heart's muscle receives an inadequate flow of blood. The patient exercises vigorously and is then injected with a radioactive tracer. The tracer concentrates in the heart's muscle and is detected with a gamma camera.
