Caption: Healthy heart muscle. Coloured SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scans showing blood flow through a human heart. Two cross- sectional, transverse scans (at top) show blood being ejected from the ventricles of the heart, a white line is drawn over the left ventricle (at top right). Rate of blood flow is shown by the colour bar at far lower right: white fastest and blue slowest. A frontal section is seen at lower right and a graph indicates tracer ejected from the heart at each contraction. Blood flow is measured by injecting the patient with a radioact- ive tracer (technetium-99m) and gamma scanning.
