Caption: Normal heart muscle. Coloured SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scans of blood flow through the muscle of the human heart. Eight "slices" through each of 3 axial planes are seen at right. Vertical & horizontal scans show a yellow horseshoe shape of fast-flowing blood through the myocardium heart muscle. Slower blood flow is seen as blue regions. A SPECT scan is made by injecting a radioactive tracer (technetium-99m) into the blood of a patient. This labels the red blood cells and blood flow rate is then visualised by gamma camera.
