Caption: Heart. Coloured engraving from 1890 of the heart & coronary blood vessels, viewed from behind. The coronary arteries (red) & veins (blue) supply the heart with blood; other tissues are brown. Blood in the middle cardiac vein flows from the bottom of the heart to join the coronary sinus vein (7). The superior (8) & inferior vena cava (5, 6) bring deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart's right atrium (3). This pumps blood into the right ventricle (1) which in turn pumps blood to the lungs. Oxygenated blood returning from the lungs through the pumonary veins (9, 10) is pumped by the left atrium (4) into the left ventricle (2), which in turn pumps blood around the body.
