Heart scan. Coloured SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scan of a normal human heart, seen in axial (horizontal) section. The blood uptake by the myocardium, the muscular wall of the heart, is shown in red. This is done by injecting the heart's blood supply with a radioactive tracer (technetium-99m or Tc-99m). Gamma ray photons emitted by the tracer are detected and an image obtained using computed tomography techniques. This allows an assessment of the adequacy of the heart's blood supply and the diagnosis of heart disorders. For a SPECT scan of a heart following a heart attack, see image M172/456.
