Caption: Heart blood vessels (orange) and lungs (blue), coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan. The small airways (bronchioles) of the lungs are seen, as well as parts of the two bronchi (two tubes at upper centre, blue). The two bronchi join to form the trachea (windpipe, not shown). Blood vessels (orange) are seen inside the lungs, which is where oxygen transfers to the blood after it is pumped there by the heart (through the pulmonary arteries from the back of the heart, centre). The rest of the heart and other blood vessels are also seen. CT scanning uses multiple X-ray beams to scan the body from different angles. Computers create a 3D image of the area scanned.
