Caption: Common sorrel leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a common sorrel (Rumex acetosa) leaf. Six stomata (leaf pores, round) can be seen. Stomata are the site of gaseous exchange in a plant. The opening and closing of the stomata is controlled by semi-circular guard cells. When the guard cells are turgid the stomata are open and when they are flaccid the stomata are closed. Magnification: x440 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
