Caption: Bone marrow. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of immature red and white blood cells in bone marrow. Blood cells are produced constantly by bone marrow as their lifespan is so short - red blood cells, for instance, last on average only 120 days before being broken down. As well as producing red blood cells, bone marrow produces platelet cells and three types of white blood cell: granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes. All the cells derive from a single ancestral cell type, the multipotential stem cell, by a process called haemopoiesis. Magnification x1575 at 5x7cm size. x800 at 35mm size.
