Caption: Megakaryocyte. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a megakaryocyte cell from human bone marrow. Megakaryocytes are giant bone marrow cells that produce platelets (thrombocytes). Platelets are vital for blood clotting. Developing platelets can be seen as disc-shaped objects on the surface of the giant cell. Surrounding the megakaryocyte are lots of red blood cells. Platelets are made from portions of the megakaryocyte cell that pinch off. Magnification unknown.
