Caption: Light micrograph of human red blood cells (erythrocytes), the principal function of which is to circulate oxygen around the body to the organs & tissues. They are biconcave in shape, an adaption for maximum surface area over which the exchange of gases may take place. Erythroytes also have enormous elasticity & ability to deform that enables them to pass through the narrow capillary vessels. The interior of the cell is packed with haemoglobin, a red iron- containing pigment which has a good oxygen carrying capacity. The nucleus & other organelles are lost as the cell matures. Magnification: X 400 (at 35mm size).
