Caption: Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of red blood cells. The red blood cells have a biconcave disc shape. They are red as they contain the pigment haemoglobin, a protein which is combined with an iron- containing structure. The haemoglobin in red blood cells is responsible for carrying oxygen to muscles and organs around the body. Platelets (smaller yellow cells) are important in the clotting process, as they coagulate at the site of an blood vessel injury, preventing blood loss and infection. Magnification unknown.
