Caption: Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of three red blood cells and a platelet (yellow). Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are biconcave disc-shaped cells. The red pigment haemoglobin they contain transports oxygen from the lungs to the organs and tissues where it is respired. The platelet, or thrombocyte, has changed from its unactivated disc-like form and become more irregular and spiny. In damaged blood vessels this change helps the blood to clot. Both platelets and red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow. Magnification: x6,300 at 6x6cm size.
