Blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of red blood cells (red) with several platelets (brown, spindly) and two white blood cells (upper centre and lower right, brown). Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are biconcave disc- shaped cells. They contain the red pigment haemog- lobin which transports oxygen from the lungs to the organs and tissues where it is respired. The platelets, or thrombocytes, have changed from an unactivated disc-like form to become irregular and spiny. In damaged blood vessels this change helps the blood to clot. White blood cells are part of the immune system which keeps the body free from infections. Magnification: x2,100 at 6x7cm size.
