Healthy blood smear. Light micrograph of a smear of human blood consisting mainly of red blood cells (erythrocytes). Four white blood cells (leucocytes) with purple nuclei can also be seen. Red blood cells are the most numerous type of blood cell. They transport oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body. They are biconcave in shape, and they are flexible enough to pass through the smallest capillaries. Each red blood cell is filled with the red pigment haemoglobin to which oxygen molecules can temporarily bind. White blood cells form part of the immune system, defending the body against disease. Magnification unknown.
