Caption: Human blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) a platelet (thrombocyte, yellow) and three white blood cells (leucocytes, orange). Red blood cells are disc-shaped and contain haemoglobin, a chemical that combines reversibly with oxygen, which allows them to transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Platelets are produced in the bone marrow, and are involved in the process of blood clotting. White blood cells are involved in the human immune system response. Lymphocytes (orange), at type of leucocyte, recognise foreign antigens and destroy invaders. Magnification: x3750 at 6x7cm size.
