Caption: Red blood cells. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of red blood cells (RBCs) passing through a capillary. RBCs, or erythrocytes, are biconcave, disc-shaped cells that transport oxygen from the lungs to body cells and remove carbon dioxide to the lungs for exhalation. RBCs are elastic and pliable, and can fit into the narrow capillaries that supply blood to all parts of the body. The capillary walls are one cell thick, allowing rapid gas exchange. RBCs are the most abundant cell in the blood and have no nucleus.
