Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human blood, showing a number of spherical, yellow lymphocytes, the smallest type of white blood cells, & two biconcave erythrocytes or red blood cells. The lymphocytes have numerous microvilli projecting from their outer surfaces; the two cells at top centre appear to be in the process of division. Lymphocytes are associated with the production of antibodies as part of the body's immunological defence system. Erythrocytes are packed with haemoglobin, the pigment involved in transport of oxygen & carbon dioxide around the body. Magnification: x880 at 35mm size.
