Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single basophil, a type of white blood cell. Basophils are the least common of the white cells. This section shows the characteristic bilobed nucleus (orange and green) and numerous large, membrane-bound granules (red), packed with the vasoactive substances heparin (an anticoagulant), histamine & slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A). Histamine & SRS- A exert a variety of effects on blood vessel walls and on the permeability of blood capillaries. Magnification: x7,000 at 6x7cm size, x3,100 at 35mm size.
