Caption: Macrophotograph of the primula flower Primula malacoides, known also as the fairy primrose. A popular spring flowering plant, it was introduced into Britain in 1908 from Yunnan, China. It is notable for the covering of a floury substance called farina along the flowering stalks, sepals & base of the petals. This is a waxy secretion produced by the farina glands to protect the flower from the effects of cold & condensation. The glands consist of a secretory cell on top of a short stalk. (see B765/026 to B765-033). Mag: X0.5 (at 35mm size).
