Caption: Lymphocyte cell. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a human lymphocyte, a type of white blood cell involved in the body's immune response. Here, microvilli project from the cell surface, and play a part in cell motility. There are two main types of lymphocytes: T-cells and B-cells. T- cells are derived from the thymus gland and give rise to a cell-mediated response, tracking down and destroying foreign pathogens directly (as cytotoxic or killer T-cells) or through summoning killer macrophages. B-cells are made in the bone marrow and provide an immune response through the secretion of antigen-specific antibodies.
