Caption: White blood cells. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through white blood cells (blue & green) or leucocytes. These protect the body against infections and fight them when they occur. They are much less numerous than red blood cells and spend a much shorter part of their lifespan in the blood itself. There are 3 main types of white blood cells; granulocytes and monocytes are responsible for destroying invading bacteria; lymphocytes stimulate the activity of the immune system and form antibodies that protect against repeat attacks of certain diseases. Magnification: x5000 at 35mm size.
