Caption: Spleen. Light micrograph of a section through spleen tissue. The spleen produces lymphocyte white blood cells in regions of white pulp called lymphoid follicles (purple, circular). Lymphocytes are a vital part of the body's immune response. The rest of the spleen is made up of red pulp (pink/purple), which contains connective tissue and blood vessels. This area of the spleen serves as a reservoir for red blood cells and blood platelets. Old red blood cells are also removed from the blood here to be destroyed. Magnification: x7 when printed 10cm wide.
