Caption: Dendritic and T-cells. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of two types of protective cell of the human immune system. Two long dendritic or Langerhans cells are seen at left stretching to the right of the image. Dendritic cells are found in the skin. They recognise foreign proteins (antigens) and ingest them into cytoplasmic Birbeck granules. Antigens are "processed" and secreted out of the cell, to be dealt with by other immune cells. Three T-cells are also seen (upper centre, upper right & lower left corner). These are lymphocyte white blood cells which find & destroy invading microorgani- sms. Magnification: x1,058 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x1,800 at 4x5 inch size.
