Caption: Antibodies. Computer artwork representing two antibodies bound to an antigen. Antibodies, special blood proteins, are synthesised in lymphoid tissue in response to the presence of a particular antigen (foreign substance). A huge range of antibodies are produced, each with some slight structural difference enabling them to bind to the surface of a different antigen. They thus act as flexible adaptor molecules, so that a wide range of infectious agents may be recognised. Once attached to an antigen, antibodies communicate with other components of the immune system, such as types of white blood cell, which will then work to destroy the antigen.
