Caption: Antibody action. Illustration of antibody action on invading bacteria. The antibodies (Y-shaped, red) are binding to and destroying the bacteria (brown) as these organisms move into the blood vessel at lower right. The vessel also contains a white blood cell (blue) and red blood cells (red). An antibody is a protein made by the immune system to combat infection. Each antibody is made to recognise a particular target antigen type, such as a bacterial surface protein. Consequently antigens have a well-defined structure. They are made by lymphocytes (white blood cells) in response to infection by bacteria, viruses or allergens.
