Caption: White blood cell. Artwork based on a transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a macrophage white blood cell (blue) surrounded by an assortment of pathogenic organisms. These include virus particles (small, round), bacteria (blue, upper and lower left), a parasitic worm (centre right) and a Giardia sp. protozoan (lower right). Macrophages are part of the immune system, which defends the body against invading micro- organisms. When a macrophage encounters a pathogen, it engulfs and destroys it, a process called phagocytosis.
