Caption: Phagocytosis. Artwork of a white blood cell (right) engulfing a bacterium (orange) by phagocytosis. White blood cells are part of the body's immune defence system. When phagocytic white blood cells encounter a foreign object, such as a bacterium, they take it into their own cell by endocytosis. A vesicle is formed around the bacterium by invagination of part of the white blood cell's plasma membrane. The bacterium will ultimately be destroyed by the white blood cell.
