Caption: Macrophage attacking bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage white blood cell (brown/white) attacking Streptococcus bacteria (yellow chains). The macrophage is engulfing the bacteria, a process that is known as phagocytosis. The bacteria will then be destroyed. Macrophages are white blood cells which attack foreign organisms in the body, such as bacteria. Many conditions are caused by Streptococcus bacteria, including sore throats and pneumonia. Magnification: x2950 when printed 10cm wide.
