Caption: Macrophage engulfing protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage white blood cell (brown) engulfing (phagocytosing) a Leishmania sp. protozoan (green). The macrophage, part of the body's immune system, surrounds the protozoan, engulfs it and destroys it, a process known as phagocytosis. This parasitic protozoan causes the tropical disease leishmaniasis, which is transmitted by the bites of infected sandflies and can be fatal.
