Caption: Vomiting. Illustrations of the mechanism (at centre) & causes (at left and right) of vomiting in the human body. An impulse from the brain stimulates the vomiting centre (green, at upper centre) in the brainstem. Nerve impulses sent to the stomach, diaphragm and abdominal wall (at lower centre) result in the stomach's contents being forcibly expelled. Vomiting can be triggered by stomach disorders (lower left) or disorders affecting the balancing mechanism of the inner ear (at left). Other causes include raised pressure in the skull (upper right) caused by head injury or brain tumour; and hormonal changes during pregnancy (at lower right).
