Caption: Abdominal and thoracic nerves. Computer-enhanced artwork of organs in the human abdomen and thorax with their supply of nerves and blood vessels. At top the head is seen with muscles (red), nerves (white) and blood vessels (blue) leading to the shoulders. At centre the lungs are seen with their intricate system of blood vessels and nerve fibres. At bottom is the yellow digestive system consisting of the intestines and colon. Nerve fibres lead information to the brain which acts as a central processing unit to control the body's responses. Drawing by the celebrated Italian anatomist Paolo Mascagni (1755- 1815).
