Caption: Leg nerves. Illustration of the skeleton of the human leg overlain with its major nerves. Nerves (yellow) are bundles of nerve cells that connect the brain and spinal cord with parts of the body. The bones shown are the spine's lower vertebrae (at top), below which is the pelvis. The thigh (femur) and shin (tibia) bones are shown in the leg separated by the knee joint. At bottom are the foot bones. The femoral nerve originates in the lumbar plexus of the lower spine and runs down the front of the femur. The sciatic nerve originates in the sacral plexus in the pelvis and runs behind the femur. Behind the shin bones is the tibial nerve, plantar nerves supply the foot.
