Caption: False-colour photograph of a coronal section through a human brain, showing the division of the brain into the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The outer grey matter of the cerebral cortex has been coloured yellow. This is the part of the brain involved in higher activities - perception, memory, thought, intellect and the initiation of voluntary activity - and consists of thousands of millions of nerve cells (neurones). Underneath the cortex lies the white matter (coloured brown here), through which connection with the rest of the nervous system occurs.
