Caption: Light micrograph of normal human cerebellum. The surface of the cerebellum is folded; here the exterior space is clear and unstained, but contains sectioned blood vessels (deep red). The cortex of the cerebellum is divided into an outer molecular layer (smooth orange stain) containing nerve fibres and an inner granular layer of nerve cells (pale, granular stain). At the junction of these two layers are the bodies of Purkinje cells, whose dendrites (processes) extend into the molecular layer. The branching dark tissue, arising at bottom right, is the medulla of the cerebellum, which consists of bundles of nerve fibres. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size.
