Caption: Close-up of the flower of Sidalacea malviflora, a garden perennial plant of the mallow and hollyhock family, which originated in the western United States. The image shows pollen coating the surface of the stigmas (the tips of the carpels, the female reproductive organs) in the centre of the flower. Once a pollen grain has landed on a stigma, it produces an outgrowth known as a pollen tube which grows downwards through the carpel to the ovary, carrying the male gametes inside. The gametes are then discharged into the ovule and fertilisation occurs.
