Caption: Child's brain. Illustration of a view of a child's brain positioned within the skull (side view). The head and brain is supported by neck vertebrae and by powerful muscles stretching from the cranium (skull) to the pectoral girdle of the shoulders. A carotid artery on each side of the neck (the left carotid artery is seen here) supplies blood to the brain and face. The brain consists largely of two cerebral hemispheres, of which the left is seen with extensive surface convolutions. The cerebrum is responsible for conscious thought, sensation & movement, including memory. Behind the ear can be seen the smaller cerebellum which is concerned with posture, balance, and movement coordination.
